Let’s cut to the chase, February 14th is Arizona’s Birthday and that’s what I celebrate the other holiday just plain and simple does not exist for me.

So a bit of explanation probably needs to go with. To me V-day one can only loose. See it comes down to two things: 1) having someone to um, “celebrate” this day and 2) being able to afford to celebrate this day. So lets start with #2.

Affording the Day

Now your significant other will say “oh it doesn’t matter, your love is all we need”. What a pile of crap that is. It becomes a showoff contest on what your friends boy friend got them. Necklaces, diamonds, rings flowers (talk about a racket on this day), clothes, dinners, trips.. ok ok..let’s face it if you are a poor shmoo and can’t afford anything nice you feel like a loser. You can’t even muster a simple nice night out in a nice place this one time a year? Loser! And I don’t buy the “its ok, we have each other”. Not when the next day all your friends you find out went to lavish places, had the steak and lobster and drank it up to a $200+ meal event. And all of you reading this saying “well that’s not my case, fine..take her/him down to McDonalds for an ice cream and that’s it ..see what the reaction is”.

Not having anyone

For single people, or those that just broke up or ok… single people this is perhaps more torture than any other holiday. It means again, that you are a loser that can’t find someone to hang with. Maybe I need to split this off a bit. See its not like a Xmas dinner or maybe Easter (typical other ‘be with someone day’) you can’t just go to a friend and say “hey, lets grab dinner or maybe just lunch”. See this is not a “date night” this is a “couples thing” and so even if you think…”hey they don’t have anyone, so why not let’s just go have fun”.. oh no, there are implications of fondness and if that is shown somehow there must be other obvious implications or consequences from this one meal on this “magic” day. And never mind giving one of those flower things to someone cause maybe you care, and you know they are not getting one from anyone else. That has severe implications other than ..”hey thought I’d be nice”. Damn I hate this day.

Why today?

So what if you can’t make it, or what if you simply forget (kinda hard with all the red all over) or if you procrastinate and don’t make the reservation and are stuck at the Denny’s (some place had to be to picked). Again, why is the day we have to show all this adoration…and put it on public display “awww don’t they look sweet together?” Please, I really would like to eat again at some point.

Bottom Line

Bottom line: if you don’t have someone ..IT SUCKS, if you can’t afford to do it right ..IT SUCKS, and if you have to be told to do it ..YOU SUCK. This holiday is all about one thing SELLING LOTS OF RED CRAP AT INFLATED PRICES to lots and lots of people. Remember in grade school when we all bought the one BIG box of little cards and we all gave a card to everyone in class (wow boys even gave cards to boys : maybe I am going back to far) and that was about it.. and yeah, there were a few occasions when not everyone got one from everyone. Well, in this case we’re all grown up a bit more and while disappointments are all over… this day to me is just a BIG SETUP for one for many people. You can only loose this day.. so wish Arizona a Happy Birthday instead.

PS.Buy Jenn a pony (inserted for a friend who tweeted “write the blog, then buy me a pony”.

More on that in the closing of 2009 blog. Today I sit behind a brand new 27″ iMac. Nope, not mine, dad’s. He got it a while back and I gotta tell ya its easy to get jealous. But considering his last was an eMac, which he really liked and did not much on its easy to be happy for him….and me since I get to use it for a few days.

This was my FIRST Christmas without a tree. That’s right no tree. I left my house after my folks’ trip to me got canceled. A late flu bug recovery meant no long trip for them. And I can’t say my place is all that great for quite recovery. My mom is not one to let a small amount of anything out of place let be. The yard is a mess and that too would not sit well. So probably best that I took the trip, although I will miss all the good food she usually makes up right before they leave.

This is the part of being Czech and coming from Eastern European heritage (born there). Parents always believed in their kids having enough food and all (yet another blog post). So with that, time to sign off. My Xmas gifts were quite nice, its amazing how some well picked out articles of clothing put a smile on your face and warmth to the tootsies.
